PGS Heritage is an independent specialised multinational heritage consultancy providing advice and solutions to public and private clients on the African continent and abroad We undertake heritage related research and management projects, providing advice to our clients across a range of energy, residential, commercial and public sectors.

We are looking to appoint a qualified senior archaeologist in the position of Cultural Heritage Team Leader in our Lesotho office to start latest 1 March 2019.

Key qualifications

  • A minimum of a masters degree in Archaeology.
  • Specific experience in San rock art, Middle and Later Stone Age, and open-air archaeological sites.
  • At least 8 years’ experience in directing and managing archaeological research and investigations.
  • Experience in Lesotho and southern Africa, in these areas of investigation.
  • Familiarity and experience of working with the Lesotho National Department of Culture or similar institutions.
  • Knowledge of Sesotho culture and language will be an advantage.

Specific tasks to include

  • Conducting and direct field excavations, analysis of archaeological material and artefacts;
  • Ensure project timeous project implementation to keep with approved project plan;
  • Development of a Cultural Heritage Action Plan in collaboration with Client, local authorities and the Department of Culture;
  • Coordination with local stakeholders;
  • Report writing, including compilation of bi-monthly progress reports and main deliverables;
  • Management of the cultural heritage field team and specialists; and
  • Design and conduct archaeological and heritage investigations in remote, rural communities.

Key responsibilities are

  • Overall management of project camp;
  • Work closely with the Project Director to ensure smooth project management;
  • Develop daily, weekly and monthly reporting protocols to keep track of key Performance Indicators;
  • Manage on site financials and provide weekly feedback to the Project Director;
  • Ensure implementation of HSE program and incident management reporting;
  • Work closely with the Collections Manager to oversee stewardship of the archaeological collections including policy and procedure creation and enforcement.
  • Direct and supervise volunteers and student programme.
  • Organise and execute the Skills Development Program initiative
  • Liaise regularly with field team to ensure they are working correctly and that their well-being is considered
