I am writing a book about the pre World War 2 Cape to Cairo (and Alternatives) travellers, and also teaching classes on the subject. As part of this research I have been able to get in touch with a number of the families of the travellers both in the UK (most) and US and it has been lovely to link them up with the work I am doing. They have been thrilled to have their relativeâs story given fresh light and somewhat surprised to find out that they were only one of many. They have also sent me new material to add to my research - and I am keeping them all âin the loopâ about progress.
I am trying to get in touch with the family of Gordon Makepeace, the journalist who wrote the book about the 1928 journey for General Motors (Port Elizabeth) which funded the journey which was undertaken in a Chevrolet sedan and truck. The book is called âCape to Stockholm â A Chevrolet Adventure â(1929) â because they continued through to London and Stockholm.
I have tried contacting the company at Port Elizabeth but although the email did not bounce, I received no response. I gather that there are a number of Makepeaceâs in South Africa and would dearly love to hear from Gordonâs âclanâ â and, in fact, any other family members of the expedition.
They are, as seen in the photo: Clive Lacey and Wallie Wilson. It also included an Englishman, Billie Williams and a NR/Zambian Tonge Simon (Sallam).
Thanking you in anticipation.
Sincerely, Margaret OâCallaghan, Canberra - margaret@ocallaghan.id.au
