I live in Vredehoek and many older buildings are being demolished in the area to make way for multi-story apartment buildings. I am concerned that our neighbours might at some point also sell to such developers and would like to find a way to protect the old buildings in my neighborhood from this fate. Our house was built in 1928 and according to a very old newspaper article my neighbour has, was among the first three houses to have been built in the whole of Vredehoek.
A friend of mine explained that it is possible to apply to become a heritage area and that under certain circumstances such an application could be granted and that such a zone would mean that on neighbouring properties multi-story buildings could not be built.
I am looking for information regarding the possibility of applying to become a heritage area and would also like to know if it is indeed true that this could save the old buildings and the character of the area.
I would be very grateful if anyone from the community could help me.
