The South African Indian Legion of Military Veterans is happy to announce that the Indian military history has been finally completed at the Ditsong National Museum of Military History in Johannesburg (Next to Jhb Zoo).

The project, which included historical research, fund raising as well as designing and implementing, was achieved thanks to the military veterans, their families, generous sponsors, and the Friends of the SA Indian Legion.

The history of Indians in the South African military spans over 140 years, beginning with their arrival in 1860 and subsequent participation in various conflicts. During the South African War / Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), Indians served in both combat and support roles, with Mohandas Gandhi organising the Indian Ambulance Corps. In both World Wars, despite racial restrictions limiting many to non-combatant positions, they made significant contributions through medical support, logistics, and engineering, with the Indian Malay Corps suffering substantial casualties in World War II. Throughout the apartheid era and Cold War period, South African Indians continued to serve despite facing discrimination. The South African Indian Legion of Military Veterans now works to preserve this legacy
