Beryl Court Blue Plaque - Johannesburg Heritage Foundation - 2018

Built in 1937 for the Standard Investment Corporation, Beryl Court is a very fine example of Art Deco, contrasting simple materials and making dramatic use of the slope to create a striking form. Standing proudly on the high ground, it is entered on the diagonal into the octagonal lift and stair tower. The receding roof line is beautifully detailed. Designed by Durban architects H.B. Hobbs and F.P. Bonieux, the west façade hints at seaside accommodation with the stairs giving direct access to each flat at ground floor.
