
We will be visiting Helvetia and Elandshoogte to explore the fascinating history of this area. Mpumalanga Heritage had outings there in 2011, 2013 and 2018 and many members who have not been there before, or wish to have a look again, are invited to join in. On the programme will be:
Helvetia: Old farmhouse on Swartkoppies, referred-to as the ‘wagon house’, Old coach house and post office, The still visible old wagon and coach routes, Gun Hill, site of the ‘Lady Roberts’ gun emplacement, Helvetia battle cemetery
Elandshoogte: Bloudak – Old Coetzee farmhouse, Coetzee family graveyard, The shed where the Coetzee brothers were shot.
- Saturday 9th August, 2025
- Meet at KLCBT, Crossing at 07:00 (if wishing to travel by convoy or share lifts) or at the entrance to the Bambi Motel at 08:00. Top of Schoemanskloof opposite turnoff to Lydenburg. From there we will proceed to the various sites.
- Please note the roads are all reasonably good so a 4WD vehicle is not necessary but an SUV would be recommended.
- Bring; bush shoes, something warm to wear (it can get cold if the weather changes), walking stick, hat, sunscreen, picnic lunch, table & chairs.
