What is the object on the chair?

Notice Expiry:
Fri, 2017-06-30 - 00:00

Here is a very rare photo of Enid Struben, Harry Struben's youngest daughter, all dressed up in fancy dress. I guess her age about 16. But what is the object on the chair? A gramophone? Can anyone assist?
