Heritage Potchefstroom Erfenis is deeply concerned about the wellbeing of the oak trees in the historic Oak Avenue of Potchefstroom. When the Oak Avenue was declared a National Monument in 1977 the lane consisted of 710 trees. During a recent survey it was found that only 530 trees survived.

In the past the city council launched various projects to keep the trees alive. These projects could not ensure the survival of the trees. Heritage Potchefstroom Erfenis is of the opinion that the caring for and maintenance of the trees is also the responsibility of every resident of the city. We cannot dump this responsibility on the city council alone. It is our city, where we live and work.

Heritage Potchefstroom is of the opinion that the only way the trees can survive is when the whole community takes responsibility for the maintenance of this unique asset. The owners of properties on which the trees stand, can play a large role in this instance, for example to see to it that the trees have enough water and to not pave under the trees.

A meeting about this matter will take place on Wednesday 15 February 2017 at 18:00 in the Main Museum in Sol Plaatjes Avenue. Heritage Potchefstroom invites all interested parties to attend this meeting. Phone Danell de Wet at 083 751 7336 if you want to attend the meeting.
