My name is Phil Braithwaite, and I am currently writing a book on my experiences living in South Africa for 16 years, from 1982 to 1998.

I remember while working in Johannesburg that the Smal Street Mall featured an amazing piece of history and engineering in the form of a "ball clock." It was a custom-made kinetic sculpture and functional timepiece that operated using a rolling ball mechanism (similar to a Congreve clock).
