In August 2021 the Border Historical Society advised of their intention to reinstate the two missing commemorative plaques of the Cambridge War Memorial in East London. A group member contacted the Society and advised that he would be willing to contribute towards the costs.

The Border Historical Society has now called for quotes to install the two new granite plaques. Quotes were received - ranging from R5 000 to R6 500.  The lowest quote - from Crankshaw Marble and Granite - has since been accepted and work is now proceeding.

We then contacted the above-mentioned member and the Society was most grateful to receive a donation from him of the full R5 000. The donation came with with the proviso that it was made anonymously - solely for the restoration of the memorial and to honour the fallen.

We are extremely grateful for this public-spirited gesture and shall respect the wishes of the donor to maintain his anonymity.
