Ian Cameron will be lifting the roofs when he talks at the next Saturday meeting of the Modderfontein Conservation Society.
His illustrated talk covers the amazing relocation of three houses from Antwerp Avenue to High Street in Modderfontein in 2015 and some of the myths and mysteries that surround the project.
Ian’s belief is that when the roofs came off the old houses the ghosts of the past were liberated, hence the title of his talk: No Ghosts, Only Spirits.
One of the reconstructed buildings is home to Ian’s business, Drysdale’s Distillery, which accounts for the emergence of spirits in the title of his talk.
The houses were moved by AECI in 2015 as they stood in the way of planned developments. Some of the old homes were demolished, but Gauteng Heritage insisted that one example of each of the homes be preserved. It was still inconvenient to have them where they were so AECI had them moved to a lovely location which the MCS fondly refers to as the ‘resurrection ground’.
Ian’s amusing and anecdotal talk will be at 14:00 on Saturday 30 May in the Education Centre in the Modderfontein Reserve and visitors are welcome. (Access from Ardeer Road, Modderfontein. Follow signs to the Education Centre).
There is a charge of R50 to help cover expenses. Scholars are free.
