The DITSONG: National Museum of Military History is proud to announce the official opening of its new exhibition wing, The Regiments Room. Developed in collaboration with military veterans’ groups and Reserve Force regiments, this dedicated space showcases treasured memorabilia collected over the years, including silverware, uniforms, badges, medals, and photographs.

This exhibition stands as a tribute to the unwavering support of veterans, whose contributions have enriched the Museum’s collections and strengthened its mission. The Regiments Room is expected to enhance the visitor experience, attract new audiences, and generate increased revenue by offering fresh and engaging displays.

Military veterans have long been integral to the Museum’s success. Their support has ranged from assisting with essential maintenance, donating artifacts, and sourcing equipment, to organizing annual parades and commemorations. These efforts are consistently offered selflessly, motivated only by the desire to preserve and celebrate South Africa’s military heritage. Notably, the funding for the Regiments Room was provided entirely by regiments and unit associations themselves.

The completion of the Regiments Room adds a vital new dimension to the Museum, reaffirming its commitment to telling a richer, more inclusive South African military history. As a space of education, reflection, and honour, the Museum ensures that visitors not only learn and enjoy their experience but also remember the bravery and sacrifice of the men and women who served our country.

The Regiments Room will be officially opened on 24 May 2026 by Ms Lynette Tlhogo, Chairperson of the Council of DITSONG Museums of South Africa. The ceremony will commence at 10:30 for 11:00 at the DITSONG: National Museum of Military History, located at 22 Erlswold Way, Saxonwold, Johannesburg, adjacent to the Johannesburg Zoo.
