While motor cars had made their appearance on the dusty roads of Johannesburg by 1906, the year of the Club’s opening, they were still relatively rate, and horse-drawn vehicles and horse-back were the more prevalent forms of transport for members. The Club also offered hunting as one of its sports, and the hunters, with the transport animals, required feeding and housing, and this stable block, with its typical “werf”, was built for this purpose.
