Hermann Kallenbach (1871-1945), pioneer Johannesburg architect and friend of M K Gandhi, developed Linksfield and Linksfield Ridge in the 1930s. He cut Kallenbach Drive and Kallenbach Pass out of the natural koppie rock, using dynamite to make roads. A skilled stonemason, he built this dry stone wall with the help of African workmen. Steps fashioned into the mountainside led to the homes in New Mountain Road.
