Jacarandas, planes, oaks, eucalyptus, and pepper trees are all abundant in Joburg's early northern suburbs.

Come along with me on Sunday, 10 December, to explore some of these trees planted in the 1880s, just a year or two after Joburg was established in 1886.

We'll start the tour in the shade of one of the first eucalyptus trees planted, a magnificent giant soaring 34m into the skies. This is normally a walking tour but because of the heat, we'll drive to various places.

I find this a satisfying tour somehow because it is tangible - we can touch these giants and measure their girths, and gaze up into their canopies and wonder at the tales they could tell. So join me to walk among nature's giants, and gasp.

  • Date: Sunday, 10 December
  • Time: 8am
  • Meet: outside the German School in Auckland Park
  • Duration: 2.5 hours
  • Cost: R300pp (if 10 or more, cost is R250pp)
