The Muizenberg Railway Station building is one of the most important heritage structures on the Southern Peninsula, and is a neighbourhood landmark. The Station building is owned by PRASA, who are responsible for its maintenance. Unfortunately, as is the case with many state-owned entity buildings, it has been neglected for at least 15 years. Though it is not within the means of Muizenberg Heritage to restore the entire structure, we have actively campaigned to lead the restoration of the Clock Tower.

  • An assessment of Clock Tower structure and clock mechanism was completed in January 2024.
  • This was followed by a drone survey in May 2024.
  • Initial cost estimates were completed on the basis of these surveys.
  • Numerous engagements were held between July 2024 and July 2025 with senior PRASA officials to ascertain the process to follow, and to receive authorisation to proceed to restoration.
  • We submitted the documentation required by PRASA to provide us with the authority to see approval to perform the restoration from Heritage Western Cape in February 2025, and have followed up regularly since then with PRASA officials.

Alas, despite all these efforts, PRASA have failed to provide us with the required approval, and we have now informed them that we are withdrawing our offer to restore the Clock Tower and will instead focus our efforts on encouraging Heritage Western Cape to issue a compulsory restoration order on the entire structure.
