What records did the Rotunda break?

I remember being told that this building set some records when it was first built as being the largest unsupported roof in Africa and maybe even in the world at the time. Does anyone know if this true? I was living in Johannesburg at the time and my Mom worked for Roberts Construction, she just happened to mention it once and I have never forgotten.
