The role of Jan Christian Smuts during the occupation of Pretoria in June 1900 provides us with a short window of history that seems insignificant, but represents a major change in focus of Smuts’ Anglo Boer War career. This topic can be dealt with in a relatively easy, historical factual, way. This would however not give credit to the complexity of Smuts’ “philosophy of life” namely Holism. The presentation contextualises the June 1900 incidents as part of Jan Smuts’ Holistic personality.

Speaker: Albert Jansen: M.Sc (Clinical Psychology)

After an early career at the University of Pretoria and the SASOL group of companies, Jansen joined the SA Defence Force (SADF) in 1984 where he became the Officer Commanding of the Military Psychological Institute and then the Health Training Forum.  He retired as the Officer Commanding of the Mobile Formation.  One of his main interests is the Anglo-Boer War with specific reference to Military Operations and the leadership issues during that conflict.
