Reflection of the Life and Work of Gertruida Brinkman

Notice Expiry:

Herewith the invite and link to Docomomo SA’s AGM and guest talk on Wednesday, 28 October 2026.

The AGM (for Docomomo-SA members only) will be at 18h00, followed by the guest talk (open to all) at 19h00. Please RSVP so that we can gauge whether quorum will be reached for the AGM. Please also share the link with anyone who might be interested in the talk afterwards.

Our guest speaker is Bryan Brinkman, a 4th generation Architect and the Director of b4 Architects, a practice based in Gqberha and Durban, specialising in Healthcare Architecture and Health Planning.

He’ll be reflecting on the life and work of his grandmother, Getruida Brinkman (nee Siemerink), who graduated from Wits in 1932 as the first female architectural graduate in South Africa. The presentation will document her life and work, with an emphasis on the strong influences of the modern movement.

It will follow her career from her first commission, the Mill Park Bowling Club, through the prolific late 1930s with the houses of Mill Park and flats of Summerstrand, before focusing on the exemplary House Stockelbach.

The second part of the talk will focus on the international travels of Gertuida and her husband Jack (also an architect) across pre-war Europe and late 1950s South America, visiting numerous examples of the modern movement and how that continued to influence her work including the PE Museum Whalehouse and culminating in her last works, the two ward tower blocks at Port Elizabeth Provincial Hospital in 1970.

We look forward to seeing you Wednesday.
