The cultural heritage of South Africa is threatened daily. Reasons for this are new development, the damage made to heritage sites which are not accepted by all or since people are not vigilant in this regard. Despite this, South Africa has some of the most progressive heritage legislation in the world.

This guide aims to provide practical guidelines which can be used by members of the public to preserve the heritage in their surroundings. It gives a short overview of heritage legislation and shows how communities can become involved in the protection of their heritage.

In order not the get bogged down in technical terminology, these aspects are not discussed in detail. It nevertheless provides ample information to be a handy guide for heritage management to both the general public as heritage practicians. In doing so it gives the necessary background to assist in providing knowledge and compassion for heritage, but also to assist communities in the protection and management of the cultural heritage.

The author, Prof Anton C. van Vollenhoven, has more than 25 year’s experience in heritage management and has completed more than 700 heritage related projects. He has published 78 woks, mostly scientific articles, and frequently lectures in this regard. He works as heritage consultant and also is extraordinary professor in History at the Mafikeng Campus of the North-west University.

The guide is in A5 format (88 pages), which makes it an easy reference.
