The Lutheran Church forms the centrepiece of the finest block of 18th Century buildings to survive in Cape Town. Recognised as historical and architectural gems they have been designated as National Monuments since the earliest days of such awards. The complex originated in the 1760's when the only form of religion allowed by the Dutch East Indies Company was the Dutch Reform. The church has functioned since the 1780s and is the oldest remaining intact church building in South Africa. Architecturally it consists of the largest unsupported roof span of its day and the only known masonary spiral stair in Cape Town. Inside, the magnificent pulpit is the work of Anton Anreith, as is the lectern and the beautifully carved doors to the rear. He was also responsible for the original facade.

We will be given a tour of the church and meet the building supervisor who will take us up to the tower from whence there are superb views of the town. If you have a 'head light' bring it along to appreciate the construction of the tower and some of the original 'graffiti'!
