Join us for a compelling journey through the life and legacy of Sir Herbert Baker – visionary  architect of empire, identity, and memory. Best known for the Union Buildings in Pretoria and the cemeteries of the Great War, Baker’s work shaped the civic and ceremonial landscapes of South  Africa, Britain, and India. This illustrated talk explores his architectural philosophy, domestic architecture, landmark projects, key collaborators, and enduring influence - from Groote Schuur and Rhodes Memorial to his fraught partnership with Sir Edwin Lutyens in New Delhi. Discover how Baker blended classical ideals with local traditions to craft a distinctive architectural  language – both celebrated and contested to this day.

About the speaker: For many years Kathy Munro was the dean of the Faculty of Commerce, Law and Management  at Wits University. Having retired in 2011, she is now an honorary professor in the School of Architecture and Planning.
