The road is named after Captain Frederick Gale, manager of Glen Deep Gold Mine. He served with the Railway Pioneer Regiment, who were attacked at Roodewal Station on 7 June 1900. The Regiment hastily erected a barricade with railway tracks and biscuit and meat tins, but were forced to flee, leaving mail bags and rations behind.
