DH Sims Tabernacle Alexandra Blue Plaque Inscription - Johannesburg Heritage Foundation

Also known as the AME Church in Alexandra, this congregation began in 1916, and the present building dates from 1933. The African Methodist Episcopal Church was established in the United States in 1816 as the first independent Protestant denomination founded by African-American people, championing African leadership, values and cultural expression. Introduced to Southern Africa by Charlotte Maxeke, the movement grew rapidly, and by 1910 its membership in the region was close to 40 000.
