Sandstone Houses of the Eastern Free State takes the form of a richly illustrated road trip commencing in the Swinburne/Harrismith area, then moving to Clarens, Fouriesburg and on to Ficksburg, Ladybrand, Tweespruit, Wepener, Clocolan, Zastron and Smithfield, including smaller settlements of interest. It chronicles over fifty houses by linking the architecture, the history of the property, and the stories of the people who resided there. The sandstone used in these buildings - which range from small to legendary – is known for its distinctive character.

As time moves on, many of these dwellings are falling into disrepair, often leading to the irreparable loss of their legacy. Through this publication's initiative, the historical record of a selection of houses willbe preserved.

Contributions from local experts enrich this landmark publication.
