The Van Plettenberg Historical Society is embarking upon a campaign to identify structures which are in excess of 60 years old and of historic interest in Plettenberg Bay and its environs and then to identify them by means of a plaque and a locality map pamphlet.

Properties immediately identified are :

  • St Michael’s Church – Kirbywood      
  • St Andrew’s Church – Brackenridge
  • St. Peter’s Church – town centre
  • Old rectory
  • Old Post Office
  • Old police station
  • Forest Hall
  • Whaling pots – Beacon Isle
  • Old School House – Piesang River
  • Boundary beacon (behind Timbershed)
  • Timbershed – Hobie Beach
  • Pastorie – Hobie Beach
  • Beacon – Beacon Isle
  • Old Police Station – Melville’s Corner
  • Blue House – Melville’s Corner
  • Whaling Pots – Beacon Isle
  • Weldon Kaia et al
  • Outspan huisie – Piesang River
  • Navigation Beacon – Signal Hill
  • White House

If readers have other suggestions, they would be most welcome. In the interim, would you like to participate by ‘adopting’ a structure and doing the necessary research necessary to prepare the plaque. If so, please contact David Rowe on rowe.greenvalley@telkomsa.net

Advising him of the structure you have chosen and he will then give you the necessary guidelines to prepare the material. The following is to assist in preparing the necessary material to be included on the plaque –

  • What 
  • Age (when constructed) 
  • Why constructed 
  • How constructed 
  • Cost of structure 
  • Builder 
  • Uses (orginal and present ) 
  • Original name 
  • A monochrome image of the earliest known view of the structure
  • Brief description of the history of the structure
