On 19 April 2018, the Benoni City Times reported that local enthusiasts were concerned that the Union Building on the corner of Princess Avenue and Swan Street in the Benoni CBD was under threat. The PHRAG was contacted and officials confirmed that no permit for any work had been approved. On 28 April, the paper provided an update saying that the owner didn't realise that heritage processes had to be followed and had now stopped work in order to make an application to PHRAG. The article also highlighted the poor state of the structure and the fact that it has been occupied by vagrants at various times.
