Kwa Mai Mai, also called Ezinyangeni (Place of Healers), was established in 1927 at the Salisbury and Jubilee Gold Mine Compound in Faraday. After a fire in the 1940s, the community was relocated here to former stables. In 1946, the Johannesburg City Council expropriated the stables and developed them into a hostel and market. Known for traditional crafts, indigenous healing practices and African food, the market encompasses a vibrant network of artisans, traders and spiritual practitioners.
