The Heritage Association of South Africa (HASA) is pleased to announce its 25th Annual Symposium, to be held in Graaff-Reinet from 4 to 6 November 2026.
In the words of the symposium convener, Johannes Haarhoff, this landmark event will fittingly take place in “a historical crucible of cultures and a point of departure for many who went north to till the soil, exploit the minerals, and build the towns and cities of the future South Africa.”
Over three days, the stories and histories of Graaff-Reinet and its wider region will be explored and enjoyed by delegates, while the town’s rich heritage will be showcased through a variety of field trips and social events.
The Graaff-Reinet Heritage Society is privileged to welcome HASA members and guests to what promises to be an unforgettable visit to the Gem of the Karoo. We warmly encourage all members and associated societies to participate fully in this milestone symposium—by attending, presenting papers, and contributing posters—to ensure a stimulating, inclusive, and memorable academic and heritage exchange.
The three-day symposium will provide a platform to explore the histories of Graaff-Reinet and the surrounding region. The Graaff-Reinet Heritage Society will host delegates for a programme that includes:
- The presentation of formal papers and research posters.
- Field trips highlighting the town’s significant architectural and cultural heritage.
- Social events designed to foster collaboration and academic exchange.
