InfrastructurePhotos is inviting built environment professionals to nominate projects and buildings for consideration in a new photographic book documenting the evolution of South Africa’s built environment.
South Africa’s cities are constantly changing. Historic landmarks sit alongside contemporary architecture, while new developments, infrastructure and urban regeneration continue to reshape the places in which we live and work.
South African Architecture: The Evolution of Our Cities will bring these stories together through photography, creating a visual record of the buildings, projects and infrastructure that have contributed to the evolution of our cities.
We are inviting architects, architectural practices, developers, property owners, engineers, contractors, project managers, urban designers, planners and other built environment professionals to submit buildings and projects that they believe deserve to be considered for inclusion.
What we are looking for
We welcome nominations across a broad range of the South African built environment, including:
- Contemporary architecture
- Significant commercial and office developments
- Heritage and historic buildings
- Urban regeneration projects
- Mixed-use developments
- Retail and hospitality
- Educational and institutional buildings
- Industrial architecture
- Transport infrastructure
- Major civil infrastructure
- Public buildings and civic projects
- Notable construction projects
- Projects demonstrating innovation, sustainability or design excellence
- We are particularly interested in projects that tell a story about how South Africa is changing.
From before to now
A central theme of the book will be the relationship between South Africa’s architectural heritage and its contemporary built environment.
Where possible, we hope to document projects within their broader historical and urban context — showing how our cities have evolved and how today’s buildings contribute to the South Africa of tomorrow.
How to nominate a project
Professionals are invited to submit:
- Project / Building Name
- Location
- Architect / Practice
- Developer / Client
- Completion Date
- Project Description
- Why you believe the project should be considered
You may also provide existing photographs, architectural information, project documentation or links to additional material.
Nominations do not guarantee inclusion in the final publication. Projects will be reviewed according to their architectural, historical, cultural, urban, infrastructural and photographic significance, as well as the overall editorial direction of the book.
Where a project is selected for new photography, InfrastructurePhotos will engage directly with the relevant project stakeholders regarding access, photography and permissions.
Be part of the record
South African Architecture: The Evolution of Our Cities aims to become more than a collection of architectural photographs.
It will be a visual record of the places South Africans have built, the cities they have transformed and the architecture that will define generations to come.
If your practice, company or organisation has been involved in a project that you believe belongs in this story, we would like to hear from you.
Help us document the evolution of South Africa through the places we build.
