A very promising meeting with the new Mayor of Fort Beaufort, his representatives, the Chief building Inspector, Mr Britz the longest serving member of our municipality and others on the state of Heritage in Fort Beaufort.

A memo has gone out from the municipal office that in recognition of the threat to the heritage buildings in the town, in accordance with Heritage Act 25 of 1999 no permission will granted for alteration or demolition without due process being followed.

We are establishing a Heritage Register for our town. I am being provided with a map of the core of Fort Beaufort and buildings will be graded I to III according to age , cultural or historical importance. Grade I building will have this protection added to the title deeds lodged in the municipal offices.

The matter of VICTORIA BRIDGE will be tabled for action in 2017. We believe that once the alternative route is upgraded for low water access the Victoria Bridge will be protected by a 5 ton limit for traffic using the old bridge.
