The suburbs of Yeoville, Bellevue, Bellevue East and Highlands were amongst the first to be surveyed in Johannesburg, and their position on the ridge to the north of fashionable Doornfontein, away from the noise and dust of the mines, but connected to the city through the tram service, ensured their popularity and rapid development. Throughout their history, the demographic shifts and cultural dislocations that have come to define Johannesburg manifested in these suburbs before almost anywhere else in the city, and this has resulted in a richly layered architectural and social record.

  • Join Brett McDougall on Saturday 1 May at 2pm as he explores greater Yeoville in More Joburg Than Joburg – the Story of Yeoville.
  • This is a virtual tour.
