“It is said that no on truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should be not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones" Nelson Mandela. Many of you know that over the last few years Jo has been pursuing her Masters, which has focused on graffiti and in particular the historic graffiti left by former inmates at Constitution Hill. Well she has finally finished and graduated, so we thought that it’s time to do a tour of this amazing site and give its graffiti some attention. So join us on a relaxed tour through one of Johannesburg’s most impressive historic sites, the Constitution Hill Precinct - From its beginnings as a prison and fort in early Johannesburg,to its present-day role as home of South Africa’s Constitutional Court. The tour will focus on the “non-white” Number Four prison, its history, famous inmates, restoration and remarkable and important collection of historic political graffiti.
