The City of Tshwane, Department of Community and Social Development, Culture and Library Division has partnered with the Ditsong Museums of South Africa and Freedom Park to host an online webinar on variation and change in the architecture of early farm dwellings around Pretoria. The short paper will be presented by the renowned Cultural Researcher Mr. Mauritz Naude.

Several of the buildings that Mauritz Naude will discuss are the property of Public Works. Out of what was at hand to build with, these early farm buildings were mainly comprised of materials from the surrounding environment, i.e. clay, earth, stone, etc., a level of sustainability hard to beat today.

These vernacular buildings generally respond well to their respective climates, through material choice and common-sense ‘architecture’ of the people who lived on the land.
