Come with me as we travel with explorer, naturalist and polymath William Burchell 200 years ago, when he took his two wagons beyond the colony's borders between 1811 and 1815. He was a deeply curious man - going back to England with 60 000 specimens of animals, reptiles, plants, birds, insects and more, to study and catalogue. He wrote two wonderful volumes recording his travels, in Travels in the interior of Southern Africa. He detailed his adventures in a marvellous annotated map.

I have these rare volumes, and have the map. If you're like me, I can spend hours poring over old maps, and this one is rich in detail, so bring along your magnifying glass! We'll page through his volumes, hear about his travels, then see some of the original drawings and paintings he produced on his travels. Remarkably, the city has around 500 of his works. I'll also tell you about how, with a group of friends, I followed in his wagon tracks for a small portion of his journey. And the discovery I made along the way!
