We have a talk lined up for the 25th March which you will find extremely interesting – a vital part of Cape Town’s and our own local history. We are very fortunate to have Melinda Silverman present this talk. It will be preceded by the brief  formalities of our Annual General Meeting. Attached please find the Agenda, Chairman’s and Treasurer’s Report

TALK: John Parker, architect and mayor: Remaking Cape Town at the turn of the twentieth century

DATE: Monday 25th March at 8 pm

VENUE: St James Retirement Hotel Main Road St James

SPEAKER: Melinda Silverman

John Parker was a prolific architect, designing hotels, houses, shops, factories and religious buildings across the Peninsula. The architectural partnership of  Parker & Forsyth designed many significant buildings in this area including the Majestic Hotel – see main image.

Parker was also a foresighted municipal official who rearranged City government so that Cape Town residents would have a reliable source of water. This talk contextualises John Parker’s work and provides background to the book recently published by his grandsons, which celebrates his huge contribution to the city during Victorian and Edwardian times.

Melinda Silverman is an architect and urban designer. She teaches design and lectures on architectural history at UCT, the University of Johannesburg and the University of the Witwatersrand.
