In 1900 Britain had 50 000 troops chasing General Christiaan de Wet and 2000 Boers. Trapped with 250 Boers north of the Magaliesberg at Wolhuterskop de Wet learnt from a local African how baboons crossed the mountain. All Boers & horses escaped. BBC -TV  tried to film for a documentary in 1998 using the best horsemen available . They failed.

Let Prof. Fransjohan Pretorius tell the story. His father showed him the route as a child. This built his interest to study and become one of South Africa’s leading South African War historians.

Could you do the de Wet crossing?  Prof. Pretorius  is prepared to take you at a later date.
