The South African War Grave Society (SAWGS) has started its first war grave project. In the West Rand area around Randfontein and Krugersdorp we have discovered graves (including war graves) dating back to the 1800s. These graves have been neglected and need to be restored and maintained.

The SAWGS will work in accordance with South African legislation and the UNESCO World Heritage Convention Act No. 49 in the preservation of war graves, concentration camp sites, historical monuments and buildings around South Africa.

During the South African War thousands of black and white women and children died in British concentration camps. These sites around South Africa must be preserved.

Restoration of the Grave Site in Randfontein

In September/October 2017 SAWGS restored the Jameson Raid British Volunteer War Grave in Randfontein. The Project is still in progress and requires further funding to reach completion.
