Warm greetings to all members old and new.  We’re very pleased to tell you that our full talk programme will resume this year. Please make a note in your diary for Monday 3rd April at 8 p.m. in the Library of the St James Retirement Hotel

Our speaker will be Beatrice (Bea) Law, author of Building the Mother City – Cape Town 1880 – 1930 – In the steps of A. B. Reid – Master Builder and City Councillor

In 2007 Bea published Papenboom in Newlands, a brief history of Newlands and its association with the South African Breweries.

A qualified teacher, Bea has spent most of her professional life coaching students in Mathematics; however, with an MSc in Geography and a Major in History, she is very conscious of the geography of urban development and this has influenced her perspective in writing her second book, Building the Mother City, a history of Cape Town in the important period 1880-1930. Only in about 2006 did she come to realize that her husband’s great uncle, A.B.Reid, had made a significant contribution to developments in the period following 1880. She has used his life and activities as a thread in her story.

Of local interest: A B Reid owned a house in Gatesville Road. His company built the Majestic Hotel, the sewerage pump station (now the Community Hall) and Petrava on Boyes Drive.

Copies of her book will be on sale
