There is an amazing hidden gem in Bloubergrant, Cape Town. It is a collection of perfume bottles from a bygone era which are truly beautiful. You can marvel at a huge, glittering array of gorgeous bottles and related treasures.

The first South African perfume museum is owned by the Kumanov family. The family are from Bulgaria where they were traders of rose and lavender oils centuries ago. They are still perfumers. The collection which began as a personal venture, now fills several rooms and is open to the public by appointment only.

Daniela Kumanov will conduct the tour for Friends during which she will talk about the history of perfume and the origins of the hundreds of bottles which range from cloudy glass to cut crystal. Elaborate travelling kits from a past era are filled with fascinating items inlaid with tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl and are trimmed with silver, which were essential to the stylish man or woman of the time.
