SOCIAL HISTORY COLLECTIONS DEPARTMENT

CONSERVATOR WATER LOGGED OBJECTS - (eighteen-monthfixed-term contract position) Project Funded Contract

Basic Salary Range: R247 320 - R334 572 per annum plus benefits

Requirements: MSc in conservation with special reference to shipwreck material - At least five years’ knowledge of shipwreck collections -Knowledge of artefacts recovered from slave shipwrecks and the conservation thereof -Management skills -Written and verbal communication skills -Valid driver’s licence

Key Responsibilities include: Plan and manage the strategic growth, development, conservation and utilization of the Maritime Archaeology Conservation Laboratory in Iziko with specific reference to slave shipwreck collections -Run a waterlogged objects training program -Set up specialised equipment to facilitate conservation procedures.

 

ASSISTANT CONSERVATOR WATER LOGGED OBJECTS (eighteen-monthfixed-term contract position) Project Funded Contract

Basic Salary Range: R183 072 – R247 680 per annum plus benefits

Requirements: Honours degree in conservation or related discipline -Knowledge of collections management -Knowledge of shipwreck collections -Knowledge of collections from slave shipwrecks -Basic chemistry -At least three years’ experience in maritime Archaeology collections.

Key Responsibilities include: Will work alongside the Conservator to set up Maritime archaeology conservation laboratory -Organise conservation workshops -Deal with Iziko’s administrative system -Develop innovative management strategies for collections -Valid driver’s license.

 

COLLECTIONS MANAGER ARCHAEOLOGY (A) (eighteen-monthfixed-term contract position) Project Funded Contract

Basic Salary Range: R247 320 – R334 572 per annum plus benefits

Requirements: MSc in Archaeology -Underwater surveying and remote sensing skills -Class IV Diving qualification -Dive Supervisor experience -Boat management skills -Knowledge of 3D site reconstruction -Knowledge of Geophysical software -Collections management experience -Shipwreck excavation experience specifically on slave shipwrecks -Written and verbal communication skills -Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities include: Underwater survey of shipwreck site -Digital 3D site reconstruction of slave shipwreck -Deliver papers at conferences, peer review articles as well as popular publication -Assist with implementation of environmental monitoring of shipwreck site -Excavation and recovery of shipwreck material -Planning and general management of field operations.

 

COLLECTIONS MANAGER ARCHAEOLOGY (B)

(eighteen-monthfixed-term contract position) Project Funded Contract

Basic Salary Range: R247 320 – R334 572 per annum plus benefits

Requirements: MSc in Archaeology -Underwater surveying and remote sensing skills -Class IV Diving qualification -SAMSA Small boat skipper certificate  -Boat management skills -Dive supervisor qualification -Knowledge of Geophysical software -Collections management experience -Shipwreck excavation experience specifically on slave shipwrecks -Written and verbal communication skills -Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities include: Underwater survey of shipwreck site -Skipper of Iziko boat  -Supervise diving -Deliver papers at conferences -Peer review articles as well as popular publication -Assist with implementation of environmental monitoring of shipwreck site -Excavation and recovery of shipwreck material -Planning and general management of field operations.

 

ASSISTANT COLLECTIONS MANAGER ARCHAEOLOGY

(eighteen-monthfixed-term contract position) Project Funded Contract

Basic Salary Range:R183 072 – R247 680 per annum plus benefits

Requirements: Honours in Archaeology -Experience with shipwreck collections -Knowledge of Slave Shipwrecks -Diving qualification will be desirable but not essential -Collection management skill -Knowledge of historic ceramics - Knowledge of GIS and Differential GPS systems -Valid driver’s license.

Key Responsibilities include: Assist with excavation in the field -Maintenance of collections and processing of specimens (sorting, preparation, registration, maintenance and preservation) -Assisting with general activities in the field -Ability to carry heavy equipment.

SALARY AND BENEFITS

The salaries quoted above do not include benefits.  Iziko benefits comprise generous contributions towards a designated retirement fund (compulsory), a designated medical aid (voluntary) and a housing subsidy (voluntary).  Other employment conditions such as working hours and leave entitlement are also generous.
