Though the history of Constitution Hill has been documented in great detail, the detention of the leaders of the June 16th Soweto Youth Uprising in No 4 prison has received little attention.

To commemorate the events of that fateful day, we will be exploring the Soweto Uprising and its aftermath with one of the Uprising’s leaders, Seth Mazibuko, at Constitution Hill starting with the Old Fort.

Seth was detained without charge for nearly a year in the punishment cells of Number 4. Number 4 was the most dreaded prison of that time and held mainly those already sentenced, so confining the youth of June 16th was sheer torture.

The prison experience starts as we enter the tunnel into whose maw prisoners were fed, arriving in black Marias.
