Maurice Smithers continues his exploration of Johannesburg’s most cosmopolitan neighbourhood, Yeoville-Bellevue, in a tour that focuses on its faith-based institutions, past and present, Jewish, Muslim and Christian (including Rastafarian), indoors and outdoors. The suburb boasts fine heritage churches – St Francis of Assisi (Catholic), St Aidan’s (Anglican), St Mark’s (Presbyterian) – and synagogues – the Yeoville and Chassidic shuls – but has also been home to many institutions associated with religious organisations – including the Beth Din and Yeoville Convent School.

In the rapid demographic changes of the past 20 years congregations have transformed, institutions have been repurposed, and many new faiths have found a home in the area. Join Maurice on a journey exploring permanence and change in the Many Faiths of Yeoville.
