The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) is an agency of the Department of Arts and Culture tasked with an overall legislative mandate to identify, assess, manage, protect, and promote heritage resources in South Africa. SAHRA invites suitably qualified individuals for the following vacancy.

MAIN PURPOSE:

To assist the BGG Divisional Manager with tasks required in the conservation, management and monitoring of burial grounds and graves of national and other significance, to ensure permitted interventions and implementation of set standards and adherence to the National Heritage Resources Act. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • to document and manage incoming applications to facilitate compliance with the set standards and BGG permitting policy;
  • to accurately summarize the key elements of the permit applications for circulation and review;
  • to accurately issue approved permit applications on SAHRIS;
  • to record the approvals that have been issued to applicants and to ensure the compliance to the conditions of the permit;
  • to review impact assessment reports to ensure that the standards are adhered to as described by relevant legislation and  SAHRA policies;
  • to create a record of decision or review comment and communicate these to the relevant stakeholders as well as assisting in policy formulation and stakeholder engagement

Research

  • Build a database of experts and conservation bodies; 
  • Conduct background research on burial grounds and graves when necessary.
  • Conduct new research to add to existing theory and data relating to burial grounds and graves.
  • Work with other employees in the unit to produce at least one research paper.
  • Conduct research for integrated heritage management.
  • Conduct historical mapping.
  • Keep updated with current trends and changes within the environment.
  • Provide data to Marketing and Communications department relating to burial grounds and graves
  • Undertake research and publish papers related to the management sites related to massacres in South Africa.

Policy Development

  • Participate and inform the development of policy.
  • Participate in the update and reviewing of BGG guidelines.
  • Assist in the development of new policies and guidelines based on changes in the heritage sector. 

 

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Honours  Degree in Archaeology or related disciplines.
  • 2 to 3 Years in Archaeology or related work.
  • Computer literacy
  • Verbal and written communication skills; presentation and negotiation skills;
  • Knowledge of NHRA and relevant legislation and heritage management principles, as well as code 08 driver’s license will complete the profile of the successful candidate.

Job Grade: Paterson C3 (basic plus normal company benefits)
