The South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) recently updated its gazetted List of Types (of Heritage Objects). Gazetted on the 18th of April 2019, (see attached).

The List of Types document serves to regulate the types of objects which may be considered to be of heritage significance, and therefore require an export permit issued by SAHRA before being allowed to leave the country. The document, is gazetted in terms of Section 32 of the National Heritage Resources Act (NHRA) Act 25 of 1999.

The updated list expands upon and replaces the previous version from 2002. It more accurately reflects and covers objects which may hold heritage significance and are therefore considered Heritage Objects in terms of the Act.

The types of objects described all require permits for exportation (permanent or temporary) issued by SAHRA in terms of section 32(19) of the NHRA before being allowed to leave the country. It is important to note that the updating of this list does not alter the assessment criteria {s.32(24)a&b} which must be applied to determine the significance of an object for which an export permit is being applied, and whether or not such permit should be issued or refused.
