Matjiesfontein village and Dr Dean Allen are pleased to present the second annual Anglo-Boer War Weekend from Friday, 16 March to Sunday 18 March 2018.

In collaboration with the Anglo-Boer War Museum, the historic Lord Milner hotel will again host a fabulous weekend appealing to all lovers of history, the Karoo and good old-fashioned story-telling. Step back in time with us as we explore this important era in our history with a variety of activities, tours and invited speakers focusing on different aspects of the war and the late Victorian period. Tokkie Pretorius, Director of the Anglo-Boer War Museum, will present Soldiers of the Queen while Dr. Johan Loock will talk about the famous Boer Commander Gideon Scheepers. Alan Duff will tell us about the Commandos of General Wynand Malan and Commandant Willem Fouche in the last weeks of the Anglo-Boer War. In addition, eminent Matjiesfontein historian and author Dr Dean Allen, will present stories from his book ‘Empire, War and Cricket’ and lead a walking tour around the village, giving visitors unique access and insight into the Victorian buildings, many of which have fascinating links to the war of 1899-1902. The weekend will also include a fascinating tour of nearby Laingsburg (and the Battlefield at Driefontein) under the expert guidance of Dr. Arnold Van Dyk. Add to this: Delicious, hearty meals; charming accommodation; and a star-gazing tour of the infinite Karoo sky. And, of course, no visit to Matjiesfontein would be complete without a Red Bus tour with our resident entertainer Johnny. With all this included in the package, join us for this not-to-be-missed weekend!
